You may have heard or read about new developments at Kylemore Abbey recently.

We wish to update you as a valuable client. It is planned to partner with Notre Dame University, Indiana (USA), in the provision of a new education centre at Kylemore Abbey. The facility, for up to 50 students, will occupy part of the old girls boarding school (vacant since 2012) and part of community accommodation.

This development will not impact on the visitor experience at Kylemore Abbey & Garden; in fact our association with Notre Dame University will be complementary.

We also have plans to improve the visitor’s experience at Kylemore, including the Abbey visit, woodland/lakeside walks, Victorian garden and catering/retail facilities.

Most importantly, we plan to build a New Monastery for the Community adjoining the Benedictine Church; this is a statement about the continued presence of the Benedictine Community at Kylemore.

Updated plans and progress will be unveiled in the interim period.

Thursday 11th December 2014

Figures published today by the CSO confirmed that the revenue accruing to the Irish economy from overseas visitors has continued to grow in 2014. Today’s data shows that for the first nine months of the year an estimated €2.8 billion was spent by overseas visitors in Ireland.

Minister Donohoe said: ‘This is a time of great positivity in Irish tourism and I welcome today’s  CSO ‘Tourism and Travel’ publication, which shows an increase of €241 million (or +9.3 %) in spending from overseas visits to Ireland for the first 9 months of 2014, compared to the same period in 2013.

“This Government realised that the tourism sector could play a critical part in our economic recovery. To support the sector, we introduced measures like a reduction in the rate of the Air Travel Tax to zero and the reduction of VAT to 9% on tourism-related services. These measures have helped reinforce the message that Ireland continues to offer greatly improved value and today’s data shows that they have worked in terms of enticing visitors to come and spend here. We remain ambitious though and last week, I launched the Tourism Ireland’s 2015 Marketing Plans which are targeting further growth of 6% in visitor numbers next year and a further 7% in associated revenue.”

Pipe bands, dance groups and performance artists come from all over the world to Galway each year to experience a parade that is widely regarded as one of the best in Ireland. The beauty of the Galway Parade is that it is small enough for a group to truly feel a part of it, yet big enough to create a special atmosphere.

Up to 50,000 spectators line the streets each year and some of the narrow walkways create an intimate cauldron that is an unforgettable experience for all participants. The Parade route moves through the centre of the medieval city, a 1.5 mile journey through narrow cobbled streets, turning onto long wide roads. The route is thronged with spectators from start to finish, creating a non-stop carnival atmosphere.

Cruinniú na mBád Festival in Kinvara takes place this year from 16th to 18th August 2013. The festival celebrates the living tradition of the sailing of beautiful Galway Hookers, this fabulous regatta hosts the legendary turf boats as the harbour village of Kinvara throws itself into a frenzy of sessions with the cream of Irish traditional musicians and singers.

Up to 100 Galway Hookers boats, once the workhorses of the coast of Connemara and North Clare, will gather for a weekend of racing and celebration at Cruinniú na mBád (Gathering of the Boats) festival in Kinvara, Co. Galway. Since its revival in 1979, the festival has become one of the most unique and successful weekend festivals in Ireland. The continuity of traditional sailing festivals, and especially Cruinniú na mBád, is very important for the survival of the craftsmanship of traditional boat building, sail making, etc.

The festival also promotes the art of traditional sailing and the culture that surrounds it, e.g. sean nós singing, the Irish language, etc.

It will include a series of races for the four types of Galway Hookers. They include: the Bád Mór, which is the largest vessel measuring between 35 to 44 feet in length; the second largest, the Leath Bhád , has a hull length of roughly 32 feet; the Gleoiteog; and the diminutive Púcán. During the festival the pubs in Kinvara are alive with the sound of music, as this festival attracts the very best traditional Irish musicians.

We have race days at the Summer Festival which add fun and excitement to the event, take a look below under Special Race Days for more information on Ladies Day and Family Day including our very popular Mad Hatters competition.
